The Sound of Music (1965)

Director: Robert Wise

Writers: Ernest Lehmann, stage musical book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, with the partial use of ideas by Ernest Lehman

Stars: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Charmain Carr, Heather Menzies, Nicholas Hammond

In Austria of the late 1930s, a former nun (Julie Andrews) takes a job as governess to the unruly children of a stern widowed Naval officer (Christopher Plummer).

The story of how she wins their hearts with her kind, cheerful nature is a delightful romance bursting with wonderful songs.

However, happily-ever-after is interrupted by the Nazi annexation of Austria as ugly politics gradually intrude into the fairy tale musical, and the family’s newly developed singing talent may prove the key to their salvation.

Musical performance is successfully integrated into a thrilling climax.

This film successfully balances bombastic scenes with big emotional payoffs and more subtle understated ones such as the moment when the Countess (Eleanor Parker) wordlessly realizes that she has lost the Captain's heart to Maria.

Andrews and Plummer are magnificent, and the Rodgers and Hammerstein songs have endured for decades.

A complete entertainment.
