A pair of scientists (Jeffrey Combs and Ted Sorel) develop a device that allows humans to see (and be seen by) strange and horrible forms of extra dimensional life that all seem to have bad intentions—particularly when fused with a sadomasochistic egomaniac.
Director Stuart Gordon’s follow up to Re-Animator doesn’t have the same gonzo brilliance, but it makes a good effort.
The inventive, and at times unrelenting, practical effects really push the limits but often turn out unconvincing.
However, everyone involved in the project seems to be doing their best to break new ground in visual effects, and they succeed a bit more often than they fail.
Combs displays that intense nervous energy that made him ideal for projects like this, and horror legends Barbara Crampton and Ken Foree provide top notch backup.
