Eye of the Beholder! (Werewolf by Night #1) (1972)

Wolfie’s new mag picks the story up where we left off, back in the closing pages of Marvel Spotlight #4.

Fortunately, the transformation back to human breaks Marlene’s spell.

Reunited with his friend Buck, they prepare to make off with the Darkhold, which Jack hopes will provide some clues to his lycanthropy.

He also touches bases with his sister, Lissa, but something seems off…

Using Lissa as a pawn, Marlene has tracked Jack and Buck. (Nothing says the 1970s like Jack’s sideburns)

I had to go back to see whether Marlene knows that Jack is a werewolf (she does) because it seems like a bad idea to have him lying around unrestrained as night falls.

Sure enough.

The werewolf, who usually seeks the forest, is compelled to return for round two.

Impatient with the battle, Marlene shoots the werewolf, and once more villains are undone by their hubris.

A momentary encounter between brother and sister, and then the werewolf is off to the forest.

The next morning, they confirm the safety of the Darkhold, and Buck has his little joke at the expense of the villains: ain’t karma a bitch?

A solid debut outing. I would have been 8 when this issue went on the stands, and I have a pretty clear memory of opening it up only to be confused and dismayed that the story opens in media res. More than 50 years later, all is clear.
