Ragnarok and Ruin! (The Mighty Thor #352) (1985)
Art and Story: Walt Simonson
A magnificent opening panel as Odin faces Surtur at last, and battle is joined.
Simonson is a wonderful artist, but his work in previous issues often seemed rushed and sketchy, with lots of short cuts; here, as if well aware of the importance of this climactic conflict, his art is detailed and dramatic.
On Earth, the Asgardians and their allies battle against the onslaught of Surtur’s numberless hordes. (I love little details like elements of the picture crossing the border of the panel, as if it is inadequate to contain such epic action.)
Meanwhile, Johnny Storm escorts Thor’s buddy Roger back across the Atlantic to deal with the Casket of Ancient Winters.
Buy they are not left to do their work unmolested.
Mission accomplished!
But what of Sif?
Battle races inconclusively in Asgard, but Surtur has a final card to play.
This little subplot is an unwanted diversion in the midst of such epic developments.
Ah, this is more like it.
Now comes the moment when all seems lost.
As the apex of a legendary Thor arc, this issue and the next rank among the very best Marvel comics.
