The Man’s Name Appears to Be…Mysterio! (The Amazing Spider-Man #141) (1975)

Author: Gerry Conway

Artist: Ross Andru

Inkers: F. Giacoia & Dave Hunt

Spidey has dragged one of the worst ideas in contemporary comics out of retirement for no apparent good reason.

But fortunately, it’s not long for this world, as Spider-Man zips down an alley that somehow turns out to be a pier.

Meanwhile, back in the civilian world, Peter is having difficulty juggling the superhero life with his responsibilities as a student.

Not a whole lot going on this issue beyond checking in with some supporting cast members, including some foreshadowing for JJJ.

Until, well into the issue, we finally meet the villain of the piece.

He uses his powers of illusion to torment Spidey and give Ross Andru an opportunity to have fun with his rogue’s gallery.

He survives the encounter, though pretty badly beaten, only to receive another surprise.

I was buying this run off the rack back in my heyday of comic collecting, so there’s undeniable nostalgic pleasure in rereading them, but I’m stuck by how little actually happens in these issues.
