Art and Story: Walter Simonson

Thor and Roger have captured Malekith and freed Melodi (AKA Lorelei), but the Casket of Ancient Winters has been shattered and the power of former Ice Ages has been released.

Back in New York, Roger becomes suspicious of Melodi’s mysterious influence over Thor…

…and finds a way to interfere with it…

…even though she has used her powers to silence him.

Odin sees it, too, but prejudice against mortals seems to affect his judgment.

Or perhaps he just has bigger fish to fry.

Odin calls a counsel…

…and shares a story from his youth to provide background to the current situation.

He tells of how he and his brothers, Vili and Ve, encountered Surtur in Muspelheim…

…and battled him to destroy the sword and deny him the flame with which he is destined to one day destroy everything.

Vili and Ve sacrifice themselves to ensure that Surtur cannot cross over into the Nine Realms, leaving Odin to return to Asgard alone.

Now the hosting of Asgard is complete, and the site of the coming battle is known.

Just one more warrior is needed…

Walt Simonson has crafted one of the all-time great Thor stories.
