The Endless Summer (1966)

Writer/Director: Bruce Brown

Stars: Mike Hynson, Robert August, Bruce Brown

A documentary about two surfers (Mike Hynson and Robert August) who travel around the world, following the summer and seeking undiscovered surf spots.

This is a simple, light, breezy, uncomplicated film that almost hypnotized me into a quiet calm with its repetitive (of necessity) shots of waves rolling into the shore.

Filmmaker Bruce Brown cut his teeth making shorter silent surf docs that he screened at venues such as coffee shops and high school gyms, narrating them live in real-time.

This film is a higher-budget (but still dirt cheap) version that radiates the joy of the sport.

Its casual look and relaxed manner make it feel like vacation footage being shown in the living room of one of the participants.

The sparse budget, low tech, and guerrilla filmmaking still manage to produce some beautiful and remarkable images.
