Thuvia, Maid of Mars (Barsoom #4) (1916)

by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Carthoris, prince of Helium and the sword-wielding son of Earthman John Carter, strives to rescue his beloved Thuvia of Ptarth from the leader of a rival kingdom, an event which may cause nations to go to war.

Although this is the first Barsoom novel to feature a protagonist other than John Carter, it otherwise follows the Burroughs formula of kidnapped princesses and frustrated lovers.

ERB delivers plenty of action and some innovative elements as he travels this well-worn path to its expected conclusion.

Highlights include the advanced mental abilities of the Lotharians and an exciting air chase over the Martian desert.
