Psycho (1960)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Writers: Joseph Stefano, based on the novel by Robert Bloch

Stars: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Martin Balsam, Vera Miles, John Gavin, John McIntire, Simon Oakland

Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) wouldn't hurt a fly, but he's not above inconveniencing a human being or two, including a young woman on the run (Janet Leigh) and an inquisitive detective (Martin Balsam).

Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller may be credited with fathering the modern slasher flick, but this top-notch film is far more than that.

The innovative plot structure, which can never be repeated with the same effect, is a masterful way of making the viewer empathize with the victim and feel the shock and loss of murder.

Many of the films that followed chose to side with the killer.

This is a crucial difference that allows Hitchcock's film to retain a certain humane quality, even as terrible things are happening on-screen.

Bernard Herrmann's magnificent score set a tone that horror movies have been trying to emulate ever since.

Spoiler alert!!! This guy gives the whole thing away!!
