Kate & Leopold (2001)

Director: James Mangold

Writers: James Mangold and Steven Rogers, from a story by Steven Rogers

Stars: Hugh Jackman, Meg Ryan, Liev Schreiber, Breckin Meyer, Natasha Lyonne, Bradley Whitford

Transported unwittingly to the 21st century, a 19th century aristocrat (Hugh Jackman) becomes involved in an unlikely romance with a hardened career woman (Meg Ryan).

The result is a light-as-air romantic comedy that bemoans the absence of old-fashioned chivalry in today's fast-paced everyone-for-themselves world.

The cast is what makes this one fly: Hugh Jackman had the perfect combination of looks, elegance, dignity, and comic timing and Meg Ryan could do these self-denying romantic parts in her sleep.

Completely inconsequential and very enjoyable.

  1. This movie was my introduction to Hugh Jackman. Very entertaining. I remember some scenes even now, years later. Like the brother of the businesswoman coaching the out of time noble in cleaning up and waiting to start the dishwasher until she was there so she would notice. Now I want to go find it and watch it again.
