The Meg (2018)

Halloween reviews 2021

Director: Jon Turteltaub

Writers: Dean Georgaris and Jon Hober & Eric Hober, based on the novel by Steve Alten

Stars: Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson, Cliff Curtis, Winston Chao, Shuya Sophia Cai

A giant, prehistoric megalodon emerges from the depths of the Marianas Trench only to find that it doesn’t stand a chance against Jason Statham.

Many reviewers have compared this film favorably with the Syfy Channel’s Sharknado series, which is a case of damning with faint praise if I’ve ever seen one.

It’s pretty entertaining most of the time, but the characters consistently pull off the kind of action movie superheroics that signal that there are no real stakes here: everybody will be able to do everything they need to do, no matter how unlikely or ridiculous.

The biggest surprise was that the black guy didn’t get eaten, even though he made it clear that he didn’t sign up for this shit.
