Divide...and Conquer (The Defenders #9) (1972)

 Marvel Events and Crossovers Project

Taking a broad historical overview of the Marvel Universe by reading through the major events and crossover events in order. (Thanks to The Marvel Event Timeline at https://comicbookreadingorders.com/marvel/event-timeline/ and Marvel Unlimited)

This issue features two more matches in the Avengers-Defenders War, which sees the two teams locked in conflict as proxies in a struggle between Loki and Dormammu. The first match up pits Hawkeye against Iron Man.

Clint shows himself to be a 70s kinda guy, but Valkyrie isn’t having it.

Hawkeye is clearly outmatched, but Englehart writes a plausible way he could hold off Iron Man and take his part of the Evil Eye--although he doesn’t show much concern for bystanders in the process.

The second match up pits Doctor Strange against Black Panther and Mantis.

Here, Englehart is much less successful at explaining why the Sorcerer Supreme couldn’t magic his way out of the situation much quicker than he does.

Why didn’t he just do this in the first place?
